Introduction

This project was for the construction of the Palliative Care East centre, since named the Louise Hamilton Centre after a public appeal. Locally-born Louise lost her life to cancer at the age of 28.

Palliative care supports patients and families whose lives are affected by incurable illness, by offering effective pain management and symptom relief as well as emotional, spiritual and practical support.

The purpose of the new centre was to provide a range of information and supportive services by various organisations working in partnership, including the NHS, charities, and patient support and bereavement groups. With professionals and volunteers working under the same roof, the aim was to bring together first-class clinical care, complementary therapies, psychological support and practical advice on social care and financial matters.

The Project

The new centre is a stand-alone building built on a greenfield site at the northern end of the James Paget University Hospital site. The project comprised the construction of a single-storey building with a steel frame structure, with a curved feature wall, facing brickwork, coloured render, a green roof and a glass atrium. The works also included various external works, including the creation of an enclosed garden area.

It is estimated that 10,000 people a year will use the Louise Hamilton Centre and it was officially opened by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal.

The project has received the following accolades:
