The new £9million University Technical College (UTC) in Warrington provides a technically orientated curriculum to 14 to 19 year olds.

A new concept in educational provision, the UTC was the first facility of its kind in the town and attracted more students in its first year than any other UTC in the country.

The project

The unique scheme saw the construction of engineering and specialist workshops, a lecture theatre, science laboratories and general teaching spaces for up to 620 students and staff.

The resulting six-storey, 55,000 sq ft building was also fully fitted out with £1m of specialist engineering equipment.

The project formed part of the second phase of Warrington’s ambitious Stadium Quarter regeneration scheme, and was strategically important for the council and regional employers.

Pre-employment training was delivered in conjunction with Jobcentre Plus and a local training provider as part of the contract, with 12 unemployed individuals given four weeks of work experience. This allowed them to achieve their Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) cards and pursue careers in construction. One trainee gained full-time employment on the project.

A further 44 young people were supported through the project, with curriculum support activities delivered to students from Warrington Collegiate and Stockport College.

The project won a silver Considerate Constructors award.

“Throughout construction we had an excellent relationship with the project team. We found them to be professional, collaborative and proactive throughout the project. We are delighted that we now have a sustainable, high-quality building that our students and staff will benefit from for years to come.”
