Introduction
This project consisted of the fit out of an existing speculative office and retail shell building to form a new civil justice centre in Wakefield
The Project
The works consisted of a new Mechanical & Engineering installation, reconfigured and new raised access floors and suspended ceilings. Metal stuff partitions, demountable partitions, door sets and second fix joinery items were installed. ISG created public and staff toilets incorporating IPS units, cubicles tiling and sanitary ware.
New wall and floor finishes were installed throughout plus there was a requirement for a small amount of fitted courtroom furniture in the original scope of works. The full courtroom furniture supply was later included as an additional project element which required usher and waiting room desks, illuminated backboards, an electric curtain, benching and public seating. Externally, ISG constructed a plant area for the air-conditioning units.
The Added Value
This was the first HMCTS (HM Courts & Tribunals Service) fit out project for the MoJ in the region. The additional role to supply all the courtroom furniture demonstrates the trust shown in our abilities. We have since been awarded further HMCTS projects and the experience has enabled us to develop a blueprint to deliver cost effective and high quality results.
Specialist works were required in the formation of the rooms and early project involvement allowed us to offer design input to achieve the required sound criteria and lighting levels.
The building’s location presented certain challenges as it was situated across split levels. To facilitate the introduction of a disabled access platform lift and opening into the lobby area, we had to cut the floor slab and excavate half a metre to bring this to the height of the entrance.
