Exterior showing Europe’s tallest student accommodation skyscrapper Nido Spitalfields

Overview

ISG constructed Europe’s tallest student accommodation, a 35-storey building in the heart of the bustling Spitalfields district of London. The £120-million development provided 1,200 student beds as well as retail units, 50,000 sq ft offices, 11 residential apartments and leisure facilities.

The Added Value

During the works ISG developed line-of-balance tracking mechanisms with a simple graphical presentation which enabled progress monitoring in all 689 rooms, corridors and the other common parts of the building. This reassured the customer that the programme was proceeding on schedule.

The slip-form cores and concrete frame were completed three months ahead of schedule and fourteen floors were handed over 11 weeks early, both giving significant commercial benefits to the customer. The highly sustainable scheme saved over 850,000 litres of potable water during construction, thanks to a 4,300-litre rainwater harvesting system.

The project

Demonstrating an ability to provide a true turnkey service, ISG successfully delivered the separate furniture contract worth £1.2 million. As this was incorporated into the overall construction programme, the client had the benefit of ISG handing the project over as a completely finished building, saving them from the additional problem of needing to furnish after completion.
