Part of a venture involving the Football Association Wales (FAW), UEFA, FIFA, the Welsh Government, Sport Wales and Newport Council, the facility at Dragon Park on the Newport International Sports Village is the new home of Welsh football and the headquarters for the Welsh Football Trust.
The centre comprises world-class training, playing and education facilities.
The scheme boasts four football pitches, including a FIFA 2-star ‘Third Generation’ (3G) artificial surface. Local clubs and community groups are granted access to these facilities as part of an agreement with the FAW to ensure a lasting local legacy for the development.
The two-storey steel-framed structure also houses extensive changing facilities, physiotherapy and treatment suites, high-tech video analysis facilities and a viewing balcony overlooking the outdoor pitches.
As the football development headquarters for the FAW, the centre also incorporates a range of administrative offices and a 100-seat conference facility, which are helping the development to become a highly-valued regional business venue.
The Added Value
ISG was challenged by the client to deliver a high-specification, world-class facility. The team worked proactively throughout the programme to introduce bespoke elements into the scheme. This approach led to the use of pear wood changing cubicles, a Welsh slate floor in the entrance hall with an etched FAW logo and a specially-created slate-effect panel with a 2m high steel FAW logo at the entrance to the main boardroom.
Outstanding collaboration between all project partners was a key factor in the success of the development. This collaborative approach saw ISG undertake pre-project workshops with the client and a leisure industry specialist, who was involved extremely closely throughout the scheme.
