The annual Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Awards bring together the brightest and the best from across the industry, as they celebrate leading lights and rising stars.

At the event in London, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) took home Client of the Year, with judges commenting, “the Ministry of Justice pushes for radical change in construction while delivering expansion at pace and scale”.

The award was collected by Craig Battye on behalf of Sue McElroy, Deputy Director, Government Commercial Organisation at the Cabinet Office. In his role as Preconstruction Director for ISG Craig led our team in the formation of the £1bn MoJ New Prisons Programme Alliance and has worked with the MoJ since 2007. Craig now heads up preconstruction for ISG supply chain partner, ESS Modular, across a number of MoJ projects.

CIOB 2024 - MoJ - Client of the Year

"Underpinned by Construction Playbook principles, alliancing opened the door for genuine collaboration between four of the UK’s biggest construction brands. It actively brought together MoJ delivery veterans with individuals entirely new to the justice sector – but with extensive knowledge of what works in comparable arenas,"

explains Craig Battye in a Building Magazine article from October 2022.

The MoJ pushes for radical change in construction while delivering expansion at pace and scale. Its rapid expansion programme will see an additional 20,000 places delivered across the prison estate over the next few years.

Focusing on and enabling positive progress across procurement and modern methods of construction, the client takes a mature approach to risk. Using the FAC-1 Alliancing contract to drive collaborative behaviours, the MoJ promotes knowledge sharing and closer working between all parties to drive value.

ISG's Kate Ribey, Pre-Construction Lead - MOJ, nominated our client for the award. She says: “It’s important to recognise the role our clients play in the delivery of projects. The MoJ is an enlightened client, working with us to ensure smart contracting is the norm, rather than the exception. The MoJ works closely with suppliers from the early stages of project development to inform procurement and ensure buildability. This adds value and helps set projects up for success from day one.”

ISG has secured over £1bn of work for MoJ since 2012, and was recently appointed to deliver two major projects valued at £135 million at HMP Liverpool and HMP Guys Marsh. We are also currently delivering the largest single refurbishment project to date at HMP Birmingham alongside a number of other refurbishment and new build projects.

Our Apprentice Construction Manager, Dilys White was also shortlisted for CIOB Rising Star, narrowly missing out on the award which recognises individuals who have demonstrated the highest level of excellence at the start of their career.
