Complex demolition and retention project showcased in top engineering title

One of ISG’s most dynamic, city centre hospitality projects has been profiled in top engineering title, New Civil Engineer. 

In the four-page article, which appeared in the magazine’s ‘innovative thinking’ section, ISG’s Scottish construction business showcased its creative approach to delivering a complicated, dynamic demolition and build process. 

The detailed case study highlights how ISG is working with Edinburgh City Council and the client to transform one of the largest vacant retail spaces in Edinburgh into a new mixed-use retail, hotel and restaurant scheme in the Scottish capital. 

Working in a live, city centre environment on Edinburgh’s busiest street created a range of challenges for the project team. Facing foot, vehicle and tram traffic issues and working in a tight space with access at the front and back of the site closed off in the day, ISG had to create some inventive construction processes, so the team could work effectively and to schedule.  

The article highlights the logistical considerations taken by the site team to organise an efficient and safe process. Furthermore, it provides details of how ISG worked in close proximity to adjacent buildings, using innovative engineering solutions to build in such a tight space.    

But overall, the main point of the article emphasised how, by building strong relationships with the local council and the client - and collaborating earlier - ISG was able to overcome the complexities of the project and is now building a thriving hospitality complex for Edinburgh.
