ISG is trialling the latest field BIM technology with the use of BIM360 on ASDA. Autodesk BIM360 is a cloud based data collection and collaboration extranet tool that ISG believe will be of great assistance in ensuring our project teams always have the right information when they need it. It works the same way as our current extranets in terms of offering a common data environment but it makes the process of the data capture more efficient.

The ever-increasing use of BIM is helping the construction industry to deliver whole-life cost savings to its clients. The use of tablet technology allows us to combine the virtual environment that BIM offers and use it in parallel with the real projects enabling real-time collaboration and coordination. We wanted to facilitate this new collaborative way of working

The project

ISG has looked to BIM not just address the growing expectations of our clients, but to also build efficiencies into day-to-day working. We provided a day of training to communicate to the design team what we were trialling, taking the opportunity to gather input into how the project team wanted to work with the new software.

The first project is currently on-site and is testing how best to use BIM. The new software is being trialled on Quality Assurance and Quality Control forms, Site Inductions, Site Progress and requests for information. We are also using the BIM as a visual aid during design team meetings where we can undertake live clash detection.

The added value

ISG will be inviting members of the client team to site during the construction period to showcase what we are trialling. The use of BIM is a core part of our future ASDA project delivery and we anticipate discussions about how best to utilise the process to create added value for all parties.

With ASDA, our AIM is to be in a position to deliver a data rich Asset Information Model (AIM). Although not a client requirement, ISG decided to go above and beyond to offer a greater insight for the client and team. The real value of working within a BIM environment is the ability to lay the foundations for the post-construction phase during the assets’ operation and maintenance where significant cost savings can be achieved by clients.
