Bolton Town Hall Transformation

About ISG

ISG is an international construction services company delivering fit out, construction, engineering services and a range of specialist solutions.

Our consistent delivery across geographies makes us the partner of choice for multi-national and local organisations building, refurbishing or fitting out their spaces. We are also focused on the communities where we work – employing local people and building networks of local suppliers.

Whether we are working on small, bespoke works, or a large-scale project of global significance, our focus is on setting the standard for construction services. Central to this is our commitment to consistency which helps us to deliver predictable outcomes for our customers, regardless of their building type, location or the sector in which they operate.

We are currently on site at over 20 projects across the North West and have extensive experience renovating listed buildings, including a scheme to refurbish the external façade of the Cunard Building in Liverpool, an award-winning refurbishment of Chester Town Hall plus internal and external works at Macclesfield Town Hall. The refurbishment of Bolton Town Hall will protect the town’s key civic building for years to come.

About this project

Bolton Council has appointed ISG to redevelop and refurbish Bolton Town Hall. The project was awarded via the North West Construction Hub, which enables us to procure public sector projects for construction services. The scheme is due for completion by the end of 2014.

The refurbishment involves creating large open-plan office spaces and doubling the number of staff able to work in the building. It also involves improving the working environment and upgrading infrastructure. Extra space and better facilities means that the council will not need as many separate office buildings. There will also be a wider range of services offered at the One Stop Shop.

We are ensuring that the Town Hall’s heritage is maintained throughout. We have formed a secure store for items such as lights, doors, frames and stone skirting, all of which will be rejuvenated and reinstated within the final scheme.

Getting involved
We are keen to maximise the economic, social and environmental benefits to the local area as a whole during our time on site and beyond.

University workshops
We are actively involved with both Bolton College and the University of Bolton, with regular workshops, site visits and work placements taking place across the course of the project.

As part of the Shared Apprenticeship Scheme with key local organisations and fellow contractors, we will have seven recruited apprentices working for us on site at different stages of the project.

We are involved in the Learners Voice a workplace mentoring scheme with CITB-ConstructionSkills, the Higher Education Academy and the University of Bolton.

Charity and community support
We were proud to sponsor the ‘Unsung Hero’ category in the Bolton Sports and Physical Activity Alliance (BOSPAA) Awards 2012/13and will continue to support such initiatives throughout the scheme.

Working together

We are working with Business Bolton to highlight the local benefits and opportunities of the scheme. Up to 70% of the materials and workforce required to deliver this scheme will be procured locally, either directly or via sub-contractors. To assist with this, we held a Supply Chain Open Day at the Town Hall in December 2012 to meet with potential supply chain partners, which attracted over 100 local companies.

Business Bolton supported us with this event. They also coordinate networking events which we attend with other local agencies and construction partners, to ensure a wider benefit to Bolton as a whole.

Considerate Constructors

The Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) is the national initiative set up by the construction industry to improve its image. As part of this, we are registered with the Scheme and will be monitored against a Code of Considerate Practice, designed to encourage best practice beyond the norm. We place a high value on maintaining good relationships with neighbours, and as we are going to be part of the community for a period of time, we will provide updates on site progress regularly via this website.

We are one of only a handful of companies invited to become Associate Members of the CCS, promoting responsible working practices within construction. We have also recently been informed that we will be awarded 16 National Site accolades at the 2014 Considerate Constructors Awards.
