“I didn’t hesitate for a minute when I was offered a role on the graduate programme – I was excited to join an innovative, dynamic and tech-led organisation.”

Magda Miazga, Construction Manager

Magda joined ISG on the graduate programme, and has since progressed to become a Construction Manager.

In the summer of 2016 I saw ISG’s hoarding near King’s Cross St Pancras Station, and after doing some research about the company, discovered they had a fantastic reputation and an inspiring vision. I decided to apply for a graduate role, and although the application process was quite extensive, it was reassuring to know that ISG was discovering who I was as a person and potential employee. I didn’t hesitate for a minute when I was offered the role, and was excited to join an innovative, dynamic and tech-led organisation.

As a graduate trainee, what I was responsible for varied depending on the rotation I was working on. When working with the building services management team, I was responsible for liaising with the construction managers, and making sure areas were ready for our subcontractors to start work. Fast forward to my rotation with the sustainability team, I completed the sustainability section in a pre-qualification questionnaire and worked on our winning work library, where I met with various project teams and wrote case studies about ISG’s social value contribution on our projects. The graduate programme gives you the chance to work across four key departments, and because of my interest in sustainability, I was able to take on a fifth rotation with the team.

“I had some standout moments during the graduate programme, including working on London’s iconic O2 Arena. Working in different places, on new projects and meeting new people meant it was impossible to get bored.”

To keep you always learning and developing your skills, ISG puts a big focus on training. When I joined, I completed seven courses quickly, including a five-day site management safety training course, first aid, asbestos awareness and working at height course. Every three months, I also attended a two-day graduate course on behavioural skills and technical knowledge. The business is always offering new courses and opportunities to grow, and ISG truly encourages our value to Never stop learning.

I had some standout moments during the graduate programme, including working on London’s iconic O2 Arena. Working in different places, on new projects and meeting people from across the business meant it was impossible to get bored. Employee wellbeing is also incredibly important to the organisation, and I had the chance to take part in a 26-mile walk along the Thames Path in London, in support of ISG’s UK charity partner at the time, Macmillan Cancer Support.

I completed the graduate programme, and have since progressed to a Construction Manager role. With ISG being a global business, I would love the chance to relocate and work abroad for some time. I’m also dedicated to educating young girls about a career in construction. It really is a fantastic career path and I believe we are on our way to breaking down stereotypes about women working in the industry.
